Rockport in the early 1800’s was a proud growing city with many downtown buildings and grand Victorian homes that showed a bustling economy along the waterfront and in the vast cattle company Coleman, Fulton and Mathis Pasture Co. Most of these structures from that period have vanished from hurricane, fire or neglect. A few of the Victorian “Ladies” still exist as testimony to their quality of material and construction. One of the Victorian “Ladies “ at 902 E. Cornwall St. has been restored to its 1890’s elegance and is now Angel Rose Bed and Breakfast. This was originally the home of Leopold Michael Bracht and his new bride Clara Bracht. The house was originally built in 1881 in the French Regency design, about one mile south of Cornwall St. by F.C. Finney a developer in the Oklahoma Subdivision. It never sold and in 1889, Mr. Bracht brought the house, cut it in three pieces, and moved it to Cornwall St. Sometime in the 1890,s he remodeled it. He added bedrooms, the gabled roof, wrap around porches, and the very Victorian Cupola to transform it into Queen Ann style and to accommodate his growing family.

Today this proud lady again shows her original yellow cypress siding, having shed the 1950’s asbestos singles that covered her for a time. The original roof joists from 1881 remain as the floor of the attic. Photographic evidence preserved on our Parlor wall, shows the various stages of her life across more than 100 years.

The Bracht family sold the house in 1946 to Judge Roy Hinton and his wife Bonnie Jean. The Hinton’s sold the house in 1973 and due to its poor condition it passed to 3 different owners until 1979 when Clouis Fisher and his wife Marilynn purchased it only to find out that is was in the process of being condemned. Clouis Fisher always felt a strong connection to the Rockport area. His great grandfather was once the Methodist Minister in Rockport and his great grandfather owned the land where “Big Tree” is located. There are also family ties to the Coleman’s of The Coleman, Fulton and Mathis Pasture Co. The Fisher family lovingly restored the home to its original beauty and it once again became a Victorian ‘Lady’. One of the finishing touches was the addition of a white Pickett fence and a true front porch swing as was the style at the turn of the century.

Angel Rose Bed and Breakfast now serves as a peaceful relaxing refuge for Rockport visitors.

The Fisher’s and the Angel Rose Bed and Breakfast have enjoyed guest from across the free world, such as Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, England, Belgium, France, Sweden, and Australia. We have also welcomed guest from Canada and across the United States and of course, Texas.

After years of welcoming weary travelers the Fishers passed the torch onto Rusty and Jennifer Day, a native Texas couple who have come to Rockport to settle. We will uphold the standard of warm Texas hospitality and great food to new and old friends of the Victorian ‘Lady’ Angel Rose.
